Brad Guigar has written on Webcomics.com about what he believes to be the myth of writer’s block:
How often are we presented with the image of tortured creative souls, staring plaintively at a the tools of their craft, unable to make the slightest move because of “writer’s block.”
Writer’s block is a myth.
With this opinion piece, Brad has managed to create a small bit of controversy, even inciting the battle cry from his webcomic compatriot Scott Kurtz:
Oh my god. It’s time for Brad and I to fight…
Saying that writers block is not real or just a matter of losing confidence is like telling someone struggling with weight loss that their problem is willpower.
While I don’t necessarily agree that writer’s block is a myth, I do believe it is an overly generic term used as a target of blame for the creative process in crisis. With this the topic of discussion on an upcoming Webcomics Weekly, it should be an interesting episode.
